from Tim -- How We Got To This Point
June 2006
Our experience with Aussies, until recently, was limited. However, for many years -- beginning in college -- I trained and field trialed
Beagles, then later Pointers and English Setters. I occasionally bred my best bitches to dogs I was impressed with. I was very successful with these litters and even had one litter of pointers that produced three shooting dog champions. However, this trialing hobby eventually became so time consuming that I got out of it altogether and turned to occasional walking quail hunts with my Brittanies which I kept a pair of. This breed is a good combination bird dog and household companion: we still have one.
Some ten years ago, we rescued an Aussie who was being terribly abused and was destined for a quick demise by bullet when I intervened and brought him home. He turned into Ann’s favorite. His beauty and intelligence were remarkable. When he died last year of cancer, we set out to find the best Aussie available. We attended some conformation shows and got interested in this new hobby. After talking to numerous breeders by phone, e-mail and at the shows, we bought Bree from Amy and Mark Loy in New Madison, Ohio. She was a year old, superbly bred, and very photogenic on the internet. When we picked her up at the airport in New Orleans we were astonished. She was hands down the most beautiful Aussie we had ever seen. Her pictures that had so impressed us had not begun to do her justice. We took her around and showed her off to the breeders and judges we knew and they too were impressed.
